Google Doodle and 2012 London Olympics

Google's daily Olympic doodle tradition began back in 2000 during the Sydney Olympics and continued through the 2002 Winter Olympics (Salt Lake City, USA), 2004 Athens Olympics, 2006 Torino Winter Olympics, 2008 Beijing Olympics and 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.


1)Google Doodle Opening Ceremony London 2012 - Friday July 27,2012


Google put up its London 2012 Opening Ceremony doodle that showed five athletes on the track holding the letters of the Google logo. The Olympic disciplines depicted on the Google Olympics opening ceremony doodle were football, swimming/diving, running/jumping, javelin throw, fencing and basketball.

Google posted the London 2012 Diving Google doodle that showed a female diver in position for the plunge on the diving board over a pool that had the Google logo painted on the bottom.


4)Google Doodle for the Fencing events at London 2012 Olympics - Monday July 30,2012










The letter 'L' in Google was shown as one of the bladed weapons being used by one of the fencers, while a helmet on the head of a fencer was modishly depicted as the first 'O'.




5)Google Doodle for Artistic Gymnastics Men's Rings- Tuesday July 31,2012










 Google had put up the London 2012 Artistic Gymnastics Men's Rings that showed a mustachioed gymnast performing. The two Os of the Google logo were formed by the rings. The London 2012 Artistic Gymnastics Men's Rings doodle was the fifth Google doodle this Olympics.



6)Google Doodle dedicated to Hockey - Wednesday Aug 01,2012












The doodle features a female player, holding a hook-shaped stick, playing on a hockey pitch. The doodle looks simple; neither the letter 'L' of Google has been replaced with the hockey stick nor the two Os of 'Google' have been replaced with balls. However, the doodle features a ball on the pitch. The six letters of Google are placed near the boundary, with second 'O' and third 'G' hidden behind the player.



7)Google Doodle dedicated to Table Tennis - Thursday Aug 02,2012








The London 2012 table tennis doodle features two players - a right handed player and a left handed player - playing table tennis. The blade of the tennis table bat in the hand of the left-handed player is shown as the second 'O' of the term Google. And the rest of the letters of "Google" are written on the net, which is used to divide the table.
The table tennis events at London 2012 Olympics are scheduled from 28 July to 8 August. There are four table tennis events that are schedueld to be contested - men's and women's Singles, men's and women's Team.
The number of participants in table tennis events are 172 - 86 men and 86 women. Each country is limited to three men and three women across all events, and to two athletes in each Singles event.
The court is 18m x 9m; the Table Tennis table itself is 2.74m long and 1.525m wide. It is 76cm above the floor and divided in half by a 15.25cm high net.
Since Table Tennis joined the Olympic programme in 1988, China has won 20 of the 24 available gold medals.
Table Tennis is based on the same basic principles as Tennis, but it has a very different scoring system, and a ball weighing just 2.7g.
Table Tennis balls are hollow, made of celluloid and weigh approximately 2.7g. Other names for Table Tennis include 'Ping Pong', 'Whiff Waff' and 'Flim Flam', reflecting the sound of the ball being struck and bouncing off the table.

The world record in men's shot put is 23.12 metres and 22.63 metres in women's shot put, whereas the Olympic records stand at 22.47 for men and 22.41 for women.

A female pole vaulter propels herself high in the sky in Google's ninth doodle during the ongoing London Olympic Games. The Google logo looms behind the stadium, the ceiling of which is painted in Google colours - blue, red, yellow and green.
In the sport of pole vault, athletes take a up with a pole in their hands and use it to propel themselves over a bar. There is no restriction on the length or diameter of the pole, the requirement is that the pole must be smooth.
Athletes propel themselves by planting the end of their pole into a box at the base of the landing area, and using their speed, momentum and the bend of the pole to get themselves over the bar.
There are different heights that athletes can choose to jump over at their own discretion. Failing in three consecutive jumps leads to elimination. Once the a height is completed or passed, the bar is raised for the next set of jumps.
Ukrainian Pole Vaulter Sergey Bubka holds the Men's World Record of a height of 6.14 metres set on July 31, 1994 in Sestriere, Italy.
The Olympic Record was set by Steven Hooker with 5.96 metres on Aug 22, 2008 at Beijing Olympics.
2012 London Olympic Games Pole Vault Men's Qualification Rounds are scheduled for August 8 and the final is on August10,2012.
The Women's World and Olympic Records are held by Russia's Elena Isinbaeva. Her World Record is for 5.06 metres and the Olympic Record is 5.05 metres.
2012 London Olympic Games Pole Vault Women's Qualification Rounds are scheduled for August 4 and the final is on August 6. There are no Indian participants in the London 2012 pole vault events

10) Synchronised Swimming is the tenth London Olympics doodle - Sunday Aug 05,2012

The sport of synchronised swimming involves two or more swimmer performing a routine, where they are judged on their synchronisation skills, as well as the overall finesse in their routine.

The Google doodle depicts eight female swimmers forming a star shaped figure, which, in-turn, is shown as the first O in the Google logo.


11)Javelin doodle depicts a male javelin thrower in action in a stadium - Monday Aug 06,2012


In Javelin throw athletes throw the javelin, a spear, as far as possible within a predetermined area.

The javelin in the men's competition is 2.7m long and weighs at least 800g.
The javelin in the women's competition is 2.2m long and weighs at least 600g.
The winner of this sport is declared based on the distance the javelin covers, which is the distance from the end of the runway till it hits the ground

12)Google Doodle on Hurdles depicts a male athlete ready to run on track - Tuesday Aug 07,2012
 London 2012 hurdles can be termed as the most fun Olympic doodle ever that Google has created.Google greeted users with its first playable Olympic doodle which shows 110 metres men’s race with 10 hurdles. The interactive doodle, in the shape of a laptop, lets the user participate in the hurdles race by using the left-right arrow keys to run and the spacebar to jump over the hurdles.

The score is displayed on the screen along with star ratings once the race is over. The experience can also be shared on Google+. 


13)London 2012 basketball is the 13th London Olympics Doodle
In the London 2012 basketball doodle, a male basketball player dressed in blue is seen ready for action inside a stadium.
Basketball is played by teams of 5 players each.

14)Google's keyboard onslaught continues for the third consecutive day with a game of London 2012 slalom canoe as its 14th daily doodle.

This is the first doodle this Olympics by Google that has been posted after the featured event was over.The doodle features a paddler in a yellow canoe trying to paddle his/her down a water course with 10 downstream gates marked with green striped poles.
Slalom canoeing involves athletes negotiating a 250 metre white water course that flows at a rate of 13 cubic metres per second, and drops 5.5 metres from start to finish.
Canoe Slalom made its debut at the Munich 1972 Olympic Games, but didn't become a permanent part of the Olympic programme until Barcelona 1992.

15)London 2012 football is the fifteenth London Olympics doodle.Football (soccer) is the most popular sport in the world, and is perhaps the only sport in the world that is played in every single country.
 Google London 2012 Football Doodle features a goalkeeper in a blue shirt which lets you to save the goals as your opponent in the red shirt tries to score goals. The opponent has 5 footballs, and tries to shoot the balls one after the other.

16)London 2012 rhythmic gymnastics is the third of its kind to make it to the list of Google doodles featured during the Olympics.

The first rhythmic gymnastics related Google doodle was posted during the 2004 Olympics held at Athens. The doodle depicted a female gymnast carrying a ribbon doing a back-flip. The female formed the second O in the Google logo, while the ribbon extended to form the second G.
The second rhythmic gymnastics related Google doodle was for the Beijing Olympics, with the roles reversed - the gymnast became the second G, while the ribbon became the second O.

Only women compete in rhythmic gymnastics, a sport that combines elements of ballet, gymnastics, dance, and apparatus manipulation. The sport involves the performance of five separate routines with the use of five apparatus--ball, ribbon, hoop, clubs, rope--on a floor area, with a much greater emphasis on the aesthetic rather than the acrobatic.
There are also group routines consisting of 5 gymnasts and 5 apparatuses of their choice. Rhythmic routines are scored out of a possible 30 points; the score for artistry (choreography and music) is averaged with the score for difficulty of the moves and then added to the score for execution.

17)London 2012 closing ceremony doodle with the view to bid farewell to the London 2012 Olympics is the seventeenth doodle by Google during the London 2012 Olympic Games.
