Guwahati(Assam,India) Molestation Monday July 9,2012

People across the country are outraged at the molestation of a teenaged girl by a mob on a busy road in Guwahati. They demand justice for the teenager.

Hoardings have sprung up across Guwahati showing the faces of the people who have been identified from the video footage of the incident that showed a teenaged girl being molested in full public view by a mob of around 20 men at a busy road in Guwahati on Monday July 9,2012 night.The victim had gone to celebrate her friend's birthday at a city bar where a man passed an obscene remark at her. This led to an altercation in the pub whose management asked them to leave. Once outside, the man followed her and passersby joined him.


The entire incident was shot on camera by a News Live cameraperson and is now viral on the Internet. Upon being questioned on the ethics behind shooting a molestation incident live and airing it, the channel said they did it "in public interest"


Senior journalist Mukul Kalita, who saved the girl from the molestors said there were around 50 people present at the spot."I got into the crowd, when she saw me, she shouted out for help. The people in the mob asked me why I was trying to save her. I called the police and they told me they know about the incident and that they were on the way," he added.


The National Commission for Women (NCW), meanwhile, has said that it will take strict action against the accused. Mamta Sharma, the Chairperson of the NCW, said, "We will take action.

The Assam Police has managed to identify only 13 of the accused and arrest only four of them, almost four days after the incident.

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has finally reacted to the Guwahati incident where a 17-year-old girl was molested in full public view by a mob, saying he has asked the police to take immediate action in the case.
Addressing a press conference, the Chief Minister said that a Special Task Force (STF) has been constituted to tackle the situation.
