UPA - 1 and UPA - 2



 Dr Man Mohan Singh (79) is featured on the cover of Time Magazine’s Asia edition, the title on the cover reads ‘The Underachiever — India needs a reboot.’ 

Time’s report titled ‘A Man in Shadow’ asks, adding that apart from facing the challenges of a slowdown in economic growth, huge fiscal deficit and a falling rupee, India’s Congress party-led UPA coalition “has found itself fending off corruption scandals and accused of showing a lack of economic direction.”

“For the past two years, the Congress-led coalition has found itself fending off scandals, most notably the corrupt awarding of 2G spectrum at prices below market value,” TIME says.

Dr. Singh’s “squeaky clean image” took a hit when anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare levelled charges against him,TIME says

2004 Elections - Between April 20 and May 10, 2004 in 4 Phases

Over 670 Million eligible voters voted for the 543 Members of 14th Lok Sabha for whichthe BJP led NDA and the INC led UPA  fought the elections.The EC limited poll expenses to Rs. 2.5 million (USD 57,000 approx.) per constituency.
INC and its UPA alliance won 218 seats and was able to put together a comfortable majority of more than 335 members out of 543 with the help of its allies.(Left Front 59 seats;BSP 19 Seats;Samajwadi Party 36 seats;MMDK 4 seats;JD(S)3 seats gave external support and these parties were not a part of the govt.

2009 Elections - between April 16 and May13,2009 in 5 Phases
 With an electorate of 714 million,it was the largest Democratic Election in the World till date.The average election turnout over all 5 phases was around 59.7%.The results of the election were announced within three days of phase five, on May 16,2009
In the 2009 General elections,the UPA won 262 seats, of which the INC accounted for 206.

The UPA was able to put together a comfortable majority with support from 322 members out of 543 members of the House. Though this is less than the 335 members who supported the UPA in the last parliament, UPA alone had a plurality of over 260 seats as opposed to 218 seats in the 14th Lok Sabha.

Mam Mohan Singh became the 2nd PM(sworn on May 22,2009) to be re-elected after completing a full five-year term(1st being jawahar Lal Nehru in 1962)

UPA - 2 Performance

1) Poverty has been on the decline
2004-05  - 37.2%
2009-10  - 29.8%
Rural poverty declined by 8 percentage points from 41.8% to 33.8% and urban poverty by 4.8 percentage points from 25.7% to 20.9% over the same period.

6)Population grew at 1.76% per annum during 2001–2011,down from 2.13% per annum in the previous decade (1991–2001)
