Split in the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) Monday Feb 24,2014

13 of the 22 legislators of Lalu Prasad's Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) today  Monday Feb 24,2014 announced that they are quitting the party.

However, within an hour, six of them returned.

The rebels, led by the RJD's chief whip in the Bihar assembly Rakesh Kumar had met Speaker Uday Narain Choudhary this afternoon and sought to be recognised as a separate group; the Speaker immediately declared them "unattached" from the RJD

The breakaway group of 13 RJD lawmakers, interestingly, has five Muslim members. Their decision to back the Janata Dal (United) strengthens chief minister Nitish Kumar's claim of being the most vociferous champion of the Muslim cause

Note

In the 2010 assembly polls, the RJD was almost routed, managing to win only 22 seats in the 243-member assembly.

JD(U) led by Nitish Kumar had won 115 seats, and its alliance partner, the BJP, 91.

The JD(U) parted ways with the BJP in June 2013 in protest against Narendra Modi's elevation in his party.
