Ukraine's parliament names acting president, seeks government Sunday Feb 23,2014


Ukrainian Parliament Speaker and closest aide of Yulia Tymoshenko, the freed opposition leader, Oleksander Turchinov has been installed as Ukraine’s acting president.

On Sunday Feb 23,2014, the Parliament voted in favor of entrusting Oleksander Turchinov with the duties of ousted President Viktor Yanukovich.

Oleksander Turchinov,ally of opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko called for an interim prime minister to be in place by Tuesday Feb 25,2014 to run the country until a presidential election called for May 25,2014

Oleksander Turchinov is from Dnipropetrovsk in southeastern Ukraine, which is also the hometown of Yulia Tymoshenko and  is the deputy leader of the Fatherland Party, established by Yulia Tymoshenko. 

Among contenders may be  -
A member of Yulia Tymoshenko's Batkivshchyna (Fatherland) party said she was one of three main candidates to be prime minister. The other two are her party colleague Arseny Yatsenyuk and Petro Poroshenko, one of Ukraine's richest men, a confectionery magnate and former minister dubbed "The Chocolate King".

Yulia Tymoshenko said Sunday that she would not seek the post of prime minister in a new coalition government formed following the ouster of president Viktor Yanukovych.

"Information that I was being considered for the post of prime minister of Ukraine came as a surprise," the former premier said in a statement released by her Batkivshchyna (Fatherland) party.

"This issue was not agreed or discussed with me. Thank you for your respect, but I ask you not to consider my candidacy for the post of the head of the government."



Parliament-appointed security officials announced legal moves against members of the ousted administration and those responsible for sniper fire and other police attacks on demonstrators in violence that left 82 dead in Kiev
