Kolkata ,West Bengal,India is set to make history by adding a floating market on its water front

Kolkata is set to make history by adding a floating market on its water front.

Officials say the proposed market is the first of its kind in India and third in Asia.

Located on the fringes on Biswa Bangla Sarani or the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass in South Kolkata near Patuli area, this will be open for public in January 2018

Local councillor Arup Bhattacharya who has initiated the dream project of chief minister Mamata Banerjee and Urban Development minister Firhad Hakim explained: 'It is one of the biggest events in Kolkata.

What makes the proposed market unique is the elevated walking path made over the water with small railings which open up to the boats parked next to them.

There will be 114 boats in the market and each boat will consist of two shops. Thus the market will have a total of 228 shops.
